Bansko

Bansko is a town and ski resort in southwestern Bulgaria, located at the foot of the Pirin Mountains and has about 10,000 inhabitants.Once mainly a stockbreeding and travelling merchant community, has become an international centre for winter and summer tourism. The first Protestant church in Bulgaria ,the Bulgarian Evangelical Church Community, was founded in Bansko on 6 August 1868. The Bansko Jazz Festival is one of the biggest summer musical events in Bulgaria which lasts 5 days every year from August 8 to 13. The concerts take place in an open-air stage at the central square of the town and are free for the public.The mountain peaks near the town is popular site for recreation for its lakes and old pine woods. Because of the rising number of tourists the infrastructure and organisation of the ski area is improved with gongola lift replacing mini bus. The ski are has 75 km of ski runs, 27 lifts and drags, serving up to 24,500 persons per hour. The variety of slopes are suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experts. Nearby village of Banya is known for its 27 thermal mineral springs. Bansko is becoming famous ski resort. In 2009. Bansko hosted World Cup alpine ski races. Alpine and biathlon competitions take place regularly and every time there are more and more visitors and tourists.
