Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam, is a country located at the center of Southeast Asia. It is bordered to the north by Burma and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and the southern extremity of Burma. Its maritime boundaries include Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast and Indonesia and India in the Andaman Sea to the southwest. Bangkok is the capital and largest city. Thailanda has a population of more than 64 million inhabitants. The country is famous for its histirical landmarks such as Phanom Rung is a temple from the former Khmer Empire, the ruins of Wat Chaiwatthanaram at Ayutthaya, Buddhist images at Wat Mahathat built during the Sukhothai period, Grand Palace in Bangkok built in 1782, is the official residence of the King of Thailand, Bangkok's Democracy Monument, Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall the old meeting place of the National Assembly, now only the State Opening is held there, Parliament House the meeting place of the two chambers of the National Assembly of Thailand, Wat Arun, in Bangkok, Wat Phra Sing, Chiang Mai Province, Phra Borommathat Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chulalongkorn University, Patong beach and many more which attracts tourists and visitours every year.Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport. Thailand has a prevalence of Buddhism that ranks among the highest in the world. The national religion is Theravada Buddhism.
