Istanbul

Istanbul, historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople, is the largest city in Turkey with a population of 13 million people. Instanbul is locate on the Bosphorus Strait and extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus. This make's the city only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. Istanbul has a Mediterranean climate with hot and humid summer's and cold, wet and often snowy winter's. The city is primarily known for its Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, but there are other architecture influence from Romans and Greeks. All this historic areas of the city were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The most prominent relic of the Greek era is Maiden's (Leander's) Tower. From the Roman architecture there are Obelisks from the Hippodrome of Constantinople. From the Byzantine period there are the Walls of Constantinople. The oldest surviving Byzantine church in Istanbul is the Stoudios (İmrahor) Monastery. There si also the Church of the Saints Sergius and Bacchus with early Byzantine and classic Roman architecture. Istanbul is rich with monument, landmarks, buildings from all historic periods. From the Ottoman influence there are many mosque, palaces and famous turkish baths. Museums, gallerys, theatres are also included in the city's culture architecture. Istanbul is a place with a lot of restaurants, Turkish restaurants, night clubs, cafes, shopping centers and market places. The city is host to many music and film festivals.
