Novo mesto
Novo Mesto is a town and one of the eleven town municipalities in the Lower Carniola region of the Slovenia. According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia it covers a total area of 298.5 km², along a bend in the Krka River and the town is considered the economic and cultural center of Lower Carniola.
Novo Mesto (literally, "New Town") was founded as Rudolfswert (Rudolfovo) on 7 April 1365, named after its founder, the Habsburg Archduke Rudolf IV of Austria, though there have been settlements in the area since pre-history.
The old city core of Novo mesto, situated on a promontory in a bend of the Krka River, is enchanting with its aristocratic Glavni trg square with arcades fronting the ground floors of rich townhouses and its characteristic City Hall. The Chapter Church, the Franciscan Church, the Dolenjska Regional Museum, and the Jakčev dom Gallery are also worth visiting, and the view of the remarkable row of Na Bregu houses—the most picturesque part of the city core—reflected in the Krka River below has often been depicted by painters.
