Tunis is the capital of both Tunisia and the Tunis Governorate, it's the largest city and has a population of more than 700.000 citizens. The city is situated on a large Mediterranean Sea gulf (the Gulf of Tunis), behind the Lake of Tunis and the port of La Goulette. Most famous place is the remainings of Carthage. Carthage was a major urban centre, now is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tunis has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate characterized by a hot and dry season and a cool and rainy season. Tunis is a center of Tunisian culture. Many landmarks, parks, mosques are making this city famous tourist atraction. Famous landmarks are the Statue of Ibn Khaldoun in Independence Square, the Finance museum in Money Square, Court of Dar Ben Abdallah, "Porte de France" or "Sea Gate", Court of Dar Soulaimania, the Dar-al-Bey or Bey's Palace. Tunis has some large parks and the largest is Belvédère Park. Famous museums of Tunis are the Bardo National Museum, the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, the Museum of the National Movement, the National Military Museum. The city holds several festivals each year, of which the largest is the Carthage International Festival. Tunis theater's are the Théâtre municipal de Tunis, the National Theatre of Tunisia, the Al Hamra theater,the the Al Hambra theater. The large majority of the population of Tunis are Sunni Muslim so there is a large number of mosques such as the Zitouna Mosque the main and oldest, the Ksar Mosque, the Hammouda Pasha Mosque, the Youssef Dey Mosque, the Saheb Ettabaâ Mosque.The Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul is the seat of the Diocese of Tunis. Other churches in Tunis are the Church of St. Joan of Arc, the Protestant Reformed Church, the Anglican church Saint-Georges. There are also the Greek Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church. Among the places of worship are Beit Yaacouv Synagogue and the Great Synagogue of Tunis.
